    What is 14k gold-filled?

It is no secret that gold prices have seen exponential growth in the past 20 years.

So, what are all of us gold-accessory enthusiasts to do?

There are two options to get the signature shine of 14k gold without the solid-gold price tag.  The first (and most common) option is gold-plate materials.  These components have an extremely thin layer of 14k gold plated over a base metal (usually brass).  This gold layer is quite thin (estimated to be 0.05% of the total weight of the metal) and over time (often a year or less) the gold layer will rub off, revealing the brass material underneath which can tarnish quite quickly.

    Enter gold-filled materials.

Gold-filled products also feature gold layered over brass but they contain a much thicker layer of gold.  Cathy uses 1/20 14k gold-filled materials in her designs.  These numbers mean these materials are legally required to contain 1/20th or 5% 14k gold by weight. That is 100x thicker than gold plate!  If cared for properly, gold-filled components are quite resistant to tarnish and will keep their signature gold shine for years.

Details & Care of your Jewelry

Each piece of Cathy Ward’s jewelry is handcrafted and finished in her small studio in Portland, Oregon. Cathy is drawn to simple but unique design. These designs can be worn with anything and everything, and by everybody. Cathy's carefully crafted jewelry pieces can be worn individually for a simple, minimalist look, or they can be all layered together in your own unique style. Using sterling silver, 14k gold-fill, semi-precious gemstones and Czech glass beads, each piece is meticulously finished with attention to every detail. As each jewelry piece is individually handmade from the forging process to the final delicate details, no two pieces are exactly alike, and all contain minor imperfections which add to the character and do not affect how long the jewelry will last or its overall quality and value.

Cathy’s jewelry is often made with sterling silver which may tarnish. The very best way to keep your silver jewelry bright and shiny is to wear it! Natural skin oils help to protect the surface of your jewelry, however do take care as sterling silver is susceptible to scratches when it encounters abrasive surfaces. When not wearing your jewelry pieces, store them in an airtight container. Small plastic bags are perfect for this. Clean jewelry with mild soap as needed and polish with soft silver polishing cloth.
